There's a lot going on in our protected areas in Peru at the moment - and we took a look at it all from above.
Tom Andersch is responsible for land management and is therefore our expert when it comes to drones and mapping our land from the air. Tom has just been to Peru to take new aerial photographs of our protected areas. The last flights were three years ago and a lot has happened since then.
Tom was significantly supported by Brock Ryder from Drones for Earth, an NGO that has been supporting our mission with technical expertise since 2021. Together, the two of them tested two new Trinity Pro drones from our partner Quantum Systems.
During their stay, Tom and Brock flew a total of around 299 km2 at four locations and took 56,939 images! In addition, an area of 93 km2 was flown with a LIDAR camera. An impressive result, despite the initially bad weather and some technical challenges. We use the resulting high-resolution images to show you transparently and comprehensibly which piece of land was protected by each donation - down to the square meter.
The two RS2+ receivers that we received from Emlid will also help us in the future. One of these receivers has been set up as a GPS home station - this allows us to carry out extremely precise georeferencing of the aerial images and thus also determine our national borders to within a few centimetres. Researchers on site will also benefit from the receivers in future when referencing their research areas. As always, you will find the corresponding geocoordinates on our certificates and can view your "personal" piece of forest on our online map at any time.
We would like to thank our partners very much for their valuable support!
Now the drones are being cleaned and checked to make them ready for their next mission - which is just around the corner!
