Insights into the VARTAN forest
The VARTAN Group's protected areas are located in the Madre de Dios region of Peru. There are 10 times more reptiles and amphibians there than in Germany, approximately 10% of all bird species in the world can be observed here, and approximately 400 tree species can be found on one hectare of forest, more than in the whole of Europe north of the Alps.

Capybaras inhabit the banks of the Tambopata River—they are the largest rodents in the world.
The protected areas around Tambopata provide a safe home for giant otters—the largest otters in the world. Their species is critically endangered and urgently needs the protection of this habitat.
The giant trees in the tropical rainforest are several hundred years old. Their powerful buttress roots give them stability.

Drones & Forest Protection
Drones serve Wilderness International as tools for research, protection, and maximum transparency. The foundation works with rapid assessments, LiDAR (laser scanning technology), and geodata analysis to map new protected areas and document their CO₂ storage capacity and biodiversity using eDNA.

The use of state-of-the-art drone and LiDAR technology makes Wilderness International's conservation concept measurable, verifiable, and transparent: high-resolution, georeferenced data allows protected areas to be precisely mapped, biodiversity and CO₂ storage to be scientifically analyzed, and each donation to be allocated to a specific square meter of forest.
Drones enable eDNA to be collected in hard-to-reach areas using umbrella-shaped sample carriers—an innovation in non-invasive species monitoring that Wilderness International has developed and refined in collaboration with research partners.
High-resolution drone images provide georeferenced aerial photographs of our protected areas for mapping and transparency purposes—but also for accessible science communication and holistic environmental education.
LiDAR (laser scanning) images penetrate the canopy of the rainforest giants and capture the three-dimensional forest structure in order to determine, among other things, the biomass density on site without entering the forest.

Wilderness International impressed the VARTAN Group above all with its transparent and concrete use of donations: a €1 donation protects 1m² old-growth forest forever. Donors receive a certificate with the geocoordinates and an aerial photo of the protected forest area, as well as a tax-deductible donation receipt.
About Wilderness International
The foundation, which is based in Peru, Canada and Germany, purchases legally secure wilderness areas and protects them for the future. The purchases are refinanced through donations, which ensure the long-term protection of the areas, supports environmental education projects, and research into CO2 storage and biodiversity.
