"Standing at the foot of a tree whose size cannot even be imagined, whose girth cannot be grasped by ten people, and whose age exceeds ours by a hundredfold - this feeling can only be understood by those who have experienced it for themselves." Environmental Ambassador Mareike Böttcher
Location of the nature reserve
The Land of the Ghost Flowers, with a size of about 73 ha, is located on the great Toba River, a few kilometers downstream from the Land of the Grizzlies and the Land of the Wapitis. It lies above the flood plain of the river. Therefore, a typical temperate rainforest with giant live trees and hemlock grows here.
Big and small beauties
In the land of ghost flowers we saw the most impressive tree specimens in terms of height, thickness and age. At their feet grow inconspicuous ghost flowers. As saprophytes without chlorophyll, these tiny flowers feed on the juices of the giant jungle trees, to which they are connected by the root network of fungi. They are eerily rare because of their extravagant lifestyle, and yet we have found entire carpets of them.
