Orcas play in the ocean waves, while bald eagles soar majestically over vast expanses of forest, and tiny carnivorous sundew grows like countless splashes of color in the marsh. Welcome to the realm of the eagles!
Location of the nature reserve
The "Land of the Eagles" is located on Porcher Island in the north of the Canadian coastal rainforest, not far from the Alaskan border and in the immediate vicinity of our nature reserve "Land of the Wolves". In 2009 and 2010, Wilderness International purchased two areas on Porcher Island, each covering about 50 ha, and protected them for the future.
Joint conservation with First Nations
This expanded an already existing nature reserve, the Gitxaala Nii Luutiksm / Kitkatla Conservancy. The total area now covers about 18,000 ha. The coasts, peatlands and forests of this island are ecologically extremely fragile and very sensitive to change.
Our vision on Porcher Island is the successive purchase of all private land threatened by deforestation, so that in the long term a huge, contiguous nature reserve is created.
As another first-hand report, read also the interview with Fabian Mühlberger. He is a biologist, nature photographer and active in conservation. In July 2019, he was part of the small WI team expedition team that checked on Porcher Island and scouted out new protected areas. As part of the trip, he spent eight days alone on the island to observe local wildlife undisturbed. In the interview, he talks about his encounter with a wild coastal wolf and why it is so important to protect nature on Porcher Island.
