About the country
"When we wake up, we see the fountains of whales, and hear them slapping the surface of the water with their fins. You don't get woken up this beautifully every day!" Ellen Weiland, Founder
Location of the nature reserve
The "Land of the Wolves" is located on Porcher Island 40 kilometers south of the port city of Prince Rupert and in the immediate vicinity of our nature reserve "Land of the Eagles". In 2009 and 2010, Wilderness International purchased and forever protected two areas of approximately 50 hectares each on Porcher Island on the northwest coast of Canada.
The island life of swimming wolves
Bonsai-like, hundreds of years old pines grow in the bog. Untouched and wild, the old-growth forest with its giant trees nestles against the Pacific coast. Seagrass sways in the shallow current of the returning tide. Rare coastal wolves beachwalk at night, while in the water fluorescent microbes glow fabulously green and blue. Welcome to the magical home of wolves!
As another first-hand report, read also the interview with Fabian Mühlberger. He is a biologist, nature photographer and active in conservation. In July 2019, he was part of the small WI team expedition team that checked on Porcher Island and scouted out new protected areas. As part of the trip, he spent eight days alone on the island to observe local wildlife undisturbed. In the interview, he talks about his encounter with a wild coastal wolf and why it is so important to protect nature on Porcher Island.
