The "Grizzly Forest" conservation area in the wilderness of Canada's Toba Valley still has a healthy grizzly bear population. Here, Canada Fever and Wilderness International protect over 35,000 square meters of endangered temperate rainforest.
The temperate coastal rainforest on Porcher Island, British Columbia Canada, is a diverse habitat with numerous habitat types such as forest, water, raised bogs with small lakes and coast. Here, too, Canada Fever actively supports the protection of this valuable ecosystem.
About the partnership
Together with Wilderness International, the specialist for Canadian travel protects endangered habitats in Canada: since 2018, Canada Fever has been protecting 16 square meters of rainforest per traveller on every trip to Western Canada. Initially, the donations were used to protect rainforest in the Toba Valley and thus one of the last healthy grizzly bear populations. Since 2023, the conservation contribution from each trip now goes to the temperate coastal rainforests on Porcher Island. This is our way of saying thank you to nature for all the wonderful experiences it gives us when we travel. All travelers can also increase the size of the Canada Fever Forest themselves. This way, they can take home one of Canada's greatest treasures as a souvenir.
As a member of the "1% for the Planet" organization since 2021, Canada Fever is committed to investing at least one percent of its annual turnover in certified nature conservation projects. This is mainly done through the partnership with Wilderness International to make an active contribution to environmental protection and avoid greenwashing.
There are not many real Canada specialists among tour operators. Kanadafieber (SK Touristik) from Senden near Münster is one of them. "Canada 24 hours a day, 7 days a week" is the motto of the self-proclaimed "Canadaholics". Motivated by their own passion for the maple country, they have been working on ever more individualized Canada travel dreams for 25 years.
Travelogue - SK's Carsten Siegel accompanies the Wilderness International team on an expedition to the Canada Fever Rainforest in September 2018
"We land the boat on a small island and have to carry the luggage to the other shore on foot. I shoulder a duffel bag and walk into the 5 degree cold glacier water. In the middle, it reaches my stomach. I fight my way to the other shore against the strong current. Finally arrived - and straight back again, because there's still more to carry. In between, another huge bald eagle flies close over the river. There is a gnawed salmon on the bank and the whole sandbank is full of fresh grizzly tracks - this seems to be a hotspot for fishing!
It is incredible how green, diverse and alive everything is. I am particularly impressed by a 700-year-old maple tree. The two trunks of the tree are covered in a thick layer of moss. Further down, I discover several wolf dens. On our way, we repeatedly find scratch marks on the trees, large grizzly footprints, gnawed salmon and bear dens. We realize that we are in the middle of the bears' living room.
The temperate rainforest in Toba Valley really is a unique piece of nature. And it was a real adventure to get there. The Salmon River in front of us, the rainforest behind us, the eagles above us and the grizzlies all around us. An unforgettable experience!
This expedition has definitely increased my respect for real wilderness and I am proud that we at SK Touristik can contribute to the preservation of these untouched habitats!
