GreenTec Dialysis launches global initiative
Together with GreenTec Dialysis, Wilderness International has developed a CO2 calculator specifically for dialysis practices that makes it possible for the first time to calculate, visualize and offset the CO2 footprint of a dialysis center. We have developed our own dialysis CO2 calculator in several joint workshops. It maps the entire value chain of a door-to-door treatment for both the patient and the dialysis center with the highest standards. We also work with manufacturers of medical equipment to obtain even more accurate emission values for devices and treatment materials.
There are around 90,000 dialysis patients in Germany. Over 12 million liters of fresh drinking water are needed every day for their treatments, and the daily electricity requirement of all dialysis centers is comparable to the consumption of a medium-sized city like Greifswald or Friedrichshafen with almost 60,000 people.
The situation is very different in countries with inadequate medical care. Kidney patients have hardly any access to dialysis treatment. In addition to economic and logistical challenges, the first step here is to provide the necessary resources such as water and electricity in sufficient quantity and quality.
Medical progress, ecology, economy and social justice must not be mutually exclusive. This is why initiatives and technological developments are being created that improve the quality of life and treatment for dialysis patients, while at the same time focusing on responsible sustainability. GreenTec Dialysis is therefore working on the implementation of resource-saving technologies and, with Smart Dialysis® , is responsible for the implementation and consistent digitalization and optimization of processes and procedures in the dialysis centers through data collection and analysis.
We are delighted about the cooperation and the vision to be a real change for this medical treatment and the patients. Thanks to the calculator and advice from GreenTec Dialysis, the carbon footprint of dialysis treatments will be more controllable in the future. It can also be subsequently reduced and offset. In addition, the cooperation will make our forest conservation project accessible to a new industry.
