Dear Wildblog readers!
A small dorsal fin here, a vertical fountain there and a huge pectoral fin over there. What we see are humpback whales. Unusual, because they are not native here. They are on a permanent journey between their northern feeding grounds and their southern mating grounds. We also witnessed this wonderful natural spectacle during our short canoe trip to a nearby river.
This river is very important for us, because if more than 20 people want to travel to an island in canoes and stay there for longer than a week, it is impossible to take enough drinking water with them. In addition to drinking water, we also enriched our dinner with fresh fish and berries. But before we got there, we had to adapt our small camp to the weather conditions. Teamwork was required to set up dry pitches and stretch washing lines.
But there was also plenty of project time. All groups used this more or less intensively. This time, the focus was on preserving knowledge in the form of discussions and interviews. There was also plenty of time to work on the patented animals; we were lucky and found a starfish, which we also filmed a video clip about.
In addition to the humpback whales, our direct neighbors also include the cone seals. The latter are also native to Germany's North Sea coast, making them the country's largest predator. However, the attempt to approach their relatives here in Canada by boat failed. The seals here are much shyer than those on Heligoland. Due to intensive hunting, they have lost their trust in humans. The whales are also suffering under the influence of humans. Ship traffic not only disturbs their communication and orientation, it also poses another danger. There are frequent collisions, which often end in serious bruises and contusions for the whales...
