The "Elders' Lunch"

Wilderness International

18.07.12 Dear Wildblog readers! At the moment we have a few days stay in Duncan, in the yoga center "Sun Lotus", but our days are still well filled and full of new experiences. Today we had the honor of attending the "Elders Lunch". This is where the Cowichan elders meet for a communal lunch, but it's much more than that, it's where culture is lived. But you don't automatically become an Elder when you reach a certain age. This status also depends on your personal contribution to the community. We were all very respectful and reverent, because it is a great honor to be invited to such an event. But once there, it was all half as bad. We were given a very warm welcome. We had our first goosebump moment when some of the Elders started drumming and singing. We all enjoyed the lunch together very much, the subsequent discussion and how it ended less so. Nevertheless, it was very moving to hear these people talk about the clear-cutting in their tribal area. We were able to follow them very well because they all spoke English. Good for us, bad for the Cowichan, because their language is becoming increasingly rare. Although there are initiatives that try to preserve the language in writing, this always means a loss in an oral culture. In the afternoon, we still had the opportunity to spend time in Duncan. But it will be quite a while before we have processed the impressions of the Elders Lunch...
