Since 2016, DIAMIR has been working together with the Wilderness International Foundation on the mission of protecting the last primeval forests on our planet in order to combine travel adventures with environmental protection and sustainability. Thanks to this cooperation, over 3 million square metres of rainforest have already been protected, which both secures the habitat of many animal and plant species and helps to stabilize the climate in the long term. This commitment was awarded 2nd place at the GreenTec Award, Europe's largest environmental prize, in 2017.
Let's continue on this path together and preserve even more unique wilderness in the long term: Protect a piece of the DIAMIR rainforest now.
have
remain permanently stored in the biomass of the forest
DIAMIR is one of the leading adventure tour operators in the German-speaking world and offers guided small group tours and individual tours in 120 countries. The offer ranges from trekking tours to safaris and photography trips. What all trips have in common is the desire to encounter the country and its people consciously and intensively. This is ensured by small groups with a maximum of 12 participants and the expertise of around 100 DIAMIR employees. Since it is almost unavoidable to emit environmentally harmful CO₂ when traveling, DIAMIR offsets the consumption of nature, measured as a CO₂ footprint, through wilderness protection. To this end, the CO₂ emissions of each trip and the storage capacity of the temperate rainforests of Western Canada were precisely calculated.
DIAMIR offsets in three dimensions for every group trip: Firstly, an area of forest is protected, which results from the CO₂ footprint of the respective trip. Secondly, this allows CO₂ to be bound in living biomass. Thirdly, DIAMIR thus ensures the long-term protection of habitats and biodiversity.
DIAMIR accompanied us on our expedition to Peru. On site, the team was impressed by our work and visited the protected forest area, ...
... to actively counteract the acute threat to the rainforest from clear-cutting.
DIAMIR also accompanied us on the night trip to investigate the caiman population in the Tambopata River.
Katha and Chrissi also lent a hand with our agroforestry project.
Many of the research projects take us deep into the Secret Forest.
That's why we like to change our perspective to experience the rainforest and its many inhabitants from above. What a view!
The protection of wilderness areas is of central importance to us in order to preserve biodiversity and combat climate change, as we have a special responsibility as a tourism company to protect the environment. This is why we have been working in partnership with Wilderness International since 2016 to make a sustainable contribution by purchasing rainforest areas in Canada and Peru.

Here you can see the certificates for all the forest areas that DIAMIR has protected so far. You can also use the link in the description to see where the protected area is located on the map.
One particular success of the partnership is the voluntary participation of customers, who can make additional donations. Between 2019 and 2022 alone, donor participation rose from 15% to 23% - and (not only) nature says "thank you"!
Kai Andersch, CEO of Wilderness International, sends his thanks from Peru for many years of important support from the community.

The wilderness areas that DIAMIR protects in the temperate rainforest are located on Porcher Island on the west coast of Canada. They are the most species-rich ecosystem in the northern hemisphere. Their ancient giant trees provide a safe habitat for an incredible number of animal and plant species.

In Peru, the protected areas are located in the Madre de Dios region, not far from the city of Puerto Maldonado along the Tambopata River. The most species-rich ecosystem on earth can be found here: playful monkeys, mysterious jaguars and liana-covered jungle giants have their habitat here.
Along the Tambopata River there are still dense contiguous rainforest areas - DIAMIR also protects habitats here.

Why old-growth forest protection with WI?
What particularly impressed DIAMIR about Wilderness International was the transparent and concrete use of the donations: €1 donation protects 1m2old-growth forest - forever. Donors receive a certificate with the geo-coordinates and an aerial photo of the protected forest area, as well as a tax-deductible donation receipt.
Let's continue on this path together and preserve even more unique wilderness in the long term:
You will receive a personalized certificate of the piece of wilderness you protected immediately after your donation.
The foundation, which is based in Peru, Canada and Germany, purchases legally secure wilderness areas and protects them for the future. The purchases are refinanced through donations, which ensure the long-term protection of the areas and enable environmental education projects and research into CO₂ storage and biodiversity.
Whether it's a plane or a road trip: with our special tool for different means of transportation and types of travel, you can calculate thecarbon footprint of your trip easily and free of charge.
And afterwards, you can offset the emissions directly by protecting valuable rainforest - so that more sustainable tourism and nature conservation go hand in hand now and in the future.
Wilderness International purchases primary rainforest areas with land title and legally protects them for all future. Donations refinance the purchases and at the same time finance long-term protection as well as environmental education and research. Donors receive a personalized certificate with the exact geo-coordinates and aerial photograph of the forest area they are protecting. Thus, the use and impact of the donation is tangible and directly traceable. We are currently working in the temperate rainforest of Western Canada and the Amazon rainforest of Peru, where we are protecting ancient primary rainforests.
It is important to protect the rainforest because this is the only way we can stop species extinction and climate change. They are home to the world's greatest biodiversity and store huge amounts of CO2. It is also important to protect rainforests because they are the basis of our existence: they provide us with clean air, clean water and stable rainfall. They also cool the environment.
In Canada, good legal security helps us, as well as the legal situations and sanctions that even prohibit trespassing.
In Peru, we have additionally started a forest guardian program with local people. To ensure long-term protection, we also have several other measures in place. In general, we visit the areas on regular expeditions to check on them. We also work with local partners who inform us of any irregularities if necessary. The donations per square meter also already include the costs for property taxes.
Like no other, the legal form of the foundation allows a (charitable) purpose to be realized permanently and independently of outside interests, thus achieving the desired effects in the long term. It is thus the most long-term organizational construct currently known. Not even states, companies or national parks are designed for such a long term. This makes the foundation the only one that is oriented toward the lifespan of the ecosystems we protect.
